Marriott Bonvoy

JW Marriott hotel at Mall of America — Marriott Bonvoy

A complete guide to joining Marriott Bonvoy, earning points, climbing elite status, and redeeming award nights.

What Marriott Bonvoy is

Marriott Bonvoy is the loyalty programme for Marriott hotels and many sister brands under the same umbrella. One free membership covers stays at places such as Marriott, Sheraton, Westin, Courtyard, Fairfield, and others. You collect points, climb elite tiers with nights (and sometimes spend), and book award nights with those points.

If you are new to the programme, think of Bonvoy as a global hotel points wallet. It shines when you stay at Marriott brands often, or when you can feed points from a card that still transfers into Bonvoy at a fair rate.

How to join

  1. Create a free Bonvoy account on Marriott’s official site or app.
  2. Save your membership number and use the same personal details as your passport or ID.
  3. Add the number on every eligible booking before check-in.
  4. Prefer member or direct rates when you want the stay to earn. Third-party OTA deals often skip loyalty.

How you earn points

Most people earn in a few simple ways. You do not need all of them on day one.

  • Hotel stays: book an eligible rate, stay as the member, and pay for the room. Points post after the stay.
  • Hotel extras: some on-property dining and other charges can earn, but rules differ by property.
  • Co-brand credit card: there has been a Marriott Bonvoy co-brand card (commonly discussed with HDFC). Card spend and welcome offers can add points or status help when the product is open and you qualify.
  • Bank point transfers: some premium cards can move rewards into Bonvoy. Ratios and availability change. Always check the live transfer list.
  • Amex Membership Rewards: many travellers treat Amex MR as a flexible pool that can feed hotel plans when Marriott (or another hotel partner) is listed and the transfer maths works.
Cash vs points first

Before you transfer bank points into Bonvoy, search the hotel dates in cash and in points. Transfers are usually one-way. If the cash rate is already good, keeping flexible bank points can be smarter.

Elite status

Elite status is separate from your points balance. Points pay for nights. Status comes mostly from eligible nights in a calendar year (Marriott also uses spend for the top tier). Higher status can mean better earn, upgrades when available, lounge or breakfast benefits at some brands, and late checkout.

Tier (typical ladder)Rough nights to aim forWhy beginners care
Member0Free to join; base earn only
SilverAbout 10 nightsSmall earn bump and a few soft benefits
GoldAbout 25 nightsOften the first tier that feels useful (lounge or breakfast style perks at many brands)
PlatinumAbout 50 nightsStronger upgrades and suite night awards when available
TitaniumAbout 75 nightsFor heavy travellers
AmbassadorAbout 100 nights + high spendTop tier; confirm current spend rule on Marriott

Marriott sometimes runs short “challenges” or status matches. Treat those as temporary boosts, not a permanent plan. Lifetime status exists for people who hit large career night milestones. Most first-time members can ignore lifetime until they are already deep into the programme.

Breakfast, lounge, and other perks

Gold and above is where many guests notice free breakfast or lounge access, but it is not identical at every brand. Some hotels give lounge access; others give breakfast for a set number of guests; a few use different local rules. Read the benefit for your exact hotel before you assume breakfast is included.

  • Room upgrades are not guaranteed. They depend on availability and property type.
  • Late checkout is often easier with higher status, still subject to occupancy.
  • Suite Night Awards and similar tools usually appear at Platinum and above. Learn the booking window before you travel.

How to redeem points

Bonvoy award prices are dynamic. The same hotel can cost very different point amounts across dates. There is no single “points equal X rupees” number that always works.

  1. Search your dates on Marriott and note both cash and points prices.
  2. Divide the cash rate (after taxes you would actually pay) by the points required. That rough paise-per-point helps you compare options.
  3. Look for the 5th night free on standard award stays of five nights or more when the promotion is active on your booking. It can materially improve value.
  4. Watch peak events and holidays. Points prices often jump when cash prices jump.

Practical tips

  • Marriott brands cover many big cities and leisure markets. Domestic nights can help you practice the programme before a big overseas redemption.
  • If a Marriott Bonvoy co-brand card is available to you, read the fee, milestone, and lounge fine print. Co-brand cards help most when you already stay at Marriott or want a clear welcome offer.
  • Amex Membership Rewards and other bank currencies are useful only when the transfer partner list still includes Marriott and the award you want is actually available.
  • For business travel, ask whether your company rate still earns Bonvoy. Some negotiated rates do not.
  • Keep one Bonvoy login. Duplicate accounts make missing credit harder to fix.

Common beginner mistakes

  • Booking on a random OTA and expecting full Bonvoy earn.
  • Transferring a large bank-point balance before checking award availability.
  • Chasing Titanium or Ambassador when Gold already covers the perks you use.
  • Ignoring taxes and resort fees when comparing cash vs points.
  • Assuming breakfast or lounge works the same at every brand.

Simple starter plan

  1. Join Bonvoy and add the number on your next eligible Marriott stay.
  2. Track nights toward Silver or Gold only if you travel enough for the perks to matter.
  3. Before any card transfer, lock the hotel dates in points search.
  4. Redeem when the points price looks fair versus cash, not just because you have a balance.
