Singapore Airlines KrisFlyer

A complete guide to joining KrisFlyer, earning miles from cards and flights, climbing elite status, and redeeming Saver awards.
What KrisFlyer is
KrisFlyer is Singapore Airlines’ frequent flyer programme. You earn miles on Singapore Airlines, Scoot in some cases, Star Alliance partners, and selected non-alliance partners. You redeem for award flights, upgrades, and a few non-flight options.
For many travellers, KrisFlyer is an aspirational Star Alliance currency. Direct SIA flights from India are limited compared with some hubs, but Singapore remains a strong gateway to Southeast Asia, Australia, and long-haul premium cabins. Saver awards on Singapore Airlines metal are the usual sweet spot.
How to join
- Create a free KrisFlyer account on Singapore Airlines’ site or app.
- Use the same personal details as your passport.
- Add your membership number on every eligible booking before travel.
- If you hold an SBI KrisFlyer co-brand card, keep the KrisFlyer number linked correctly so card earn posts cleanly.
Miles vs elite status
- KrisFlyer miles: the balance you redeem for awards and upgrades.
- Elite miles: what moves you through Elite Silver and Elite Gold in a membership year.
- PPS Club is a separate premium-cabin spend programme. It is not the same ladder as KrisFlyer Elite Gold.
- Milestone rewards can appear as you accumulate elite miles. Treat them as extras, not the core plan.
Elite tiers
| Tier | Rough path people discuss | Why beginners care |
|---|---|---|
| KrisFlyer | Join for free | Earn, redeem, mix miles and cash on some products |
| Elite Silver | About 25,000 elite miles in a membership year | Tier bonus miles, better seat tools, Scoot extras |
| Elite Gold | About 50,000 elite miles | Star Alliance Gold style lounge and priority benefits |
| PPS Club | High spend in Singapore Airlines premium cabins | Premium-cabin recognition for frequent SIA flyers |
Elite Gold is the usual status goal if you want lounge access and priority across Star Alliance. PPS Club only makes sense if you already buy a lot of Singapore Airlines Business or First. Confirm current thresholds on the official pages.
How you earn KrisFlyer miles
- Flying Singapore Airlines, Scoot where eligible, and Star Alliance partners in earning fare classes.
- Bank transfers from credit cards that still list KrisFlyer. Common routes people discuss include HSBC around 1:1, selected HDFC premium cards around 1:1 or 2:1, and Amex Membership Rewards around 2:1.
- SBI KrisFlyer co-brand cards for people who already spend into that product.
- Hotel or lifestyle partners. Ratios are often weak, so use them mainly for small top-ups.
Bank points usually move one way. Search the Singapore Airlines or partner award first. If only expensive Advantage or Access space shows, waiting or using another programme can be smarter.
Feeding KrisFlyer from credit cards
| Route | Ratio people commonly cite | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| HSBC TravelOne / Premier | 1:1 | Often discussed as a clean KrisFlyer path |
| HDFC Infinia / Diners Black Metal | 1:1 | Confirm in SmartBuy or the current transfer flow |
| HDFC Regalia Gold and similar | 2:1 | Product-specific; check the portal |
| Amex Membership Rewards | 2:1 | Useful when Amex is already your earn engine |
| Axis EDGE cards | Varies by product | Confirm live before moving a large balance |
| SBI KrisFlyer co-brand | Card earn, not a transfer | Read fee, welcome, and category caps carefully |
How to redeem
Singapore Airlines award search usually shows Saver, Advantage, and Access style buckets. Saver is the lowest mileage and the hardest to find. Advantage and Access cost more miles but open more dates.
- Start with Singapore Airlines metal awards. Popular beginner routes include India to Singapore and nearby leisure cities when Saver space exists.
- Premium cabins on the A380 and other widebodies are aspirational. Search early and stay flexible on dates.
- Partner Star Alliance awards are possible, but fuel surcharges can raise the cash outlay. Price the whole ticket.
- You can usually add nominees so family awards book under your account. Nominee changes can carry fees and cooling-off rules.
- Upgrades with miles depend on fare class and route. Mixed-cabin trips may need phone handling.
- KrisShop is a last resort for stranded miles, not a primary redemption strategy.
Practical tips
- Compare KrisFlyer with Maharaja Club and other Star currencies before locking bank points into one programme.
- If your goal is a specific SIA Suites or Business seat, chase that award first. Do not transfer on hope.
- Direct India to Singapore flights are useful for sampling the product without a long connection.
- Watch change and cancellation fees. Saver awards are usually less flexible than higher buckets.
- Keep one KrisFlyer login. Duplicate accounts make missing credit harder to fix.
Common beginner mistakes
- Transferring a large bank balance before Saver space appears.
- Ignoring partner fuel surcharges on Star Alliance awards.
- Chasing PPS Club when Elite Gold already covers the benefits you need.
- Redeeming KrisShop junk just to empty a balance.
- Assuming every India to USA or Europe award is cheap in miles. Long-haul premium often needs a big balance.
Simple starter plan
- Join KrisFlyer and add the number on your next eligible Singapore Airlines or Star booking.
- Search a real award you want, preferably Saver on Singapore Airlines metal.
- Transfer only the miles you need after space looks fair versus cash.
- Use Elite Gold as a status project only if your flying year can support it.
