Amex India pauses new card applications — expected back mid-October

American Express India featured cards page announcing a temporary pause on new card applications

American Express has put a banner on its India cards pages: it is temporarily pausing the acceptance of new card applications while it makes planned updates to technology platforms for domestic card issuing. The notice was live on 27 August 2026. This is another sourcing pause, not an India exit—and nothing in the banner changes how existing Cardmembers spend, earn Membership Rewards, or pay bills.

Apply links can vanish without a second banner

As of 27 August, product pages still listed Platinum Charge, Platinum Reserve, and Platinum Travel, and some direct application flows still opened. Treat that as temporary. If you need a new Amex, complete a live form now or wait for the reopen—do not start an application you cannot finish in one sitting.

What Amex actually said

The featured-cards notice reads: American Express is temporarily pausing the acceptance of new card applications in India as it makes planned updates to its technology platforms for domestic card issuing operations. That is an operations/tech message, not a product shutdown and not a statement that Amex is leaving the market.

Can you still apply?

  • Direct application URLs on americanexpress.com/in were still opening for some products on 27 August.
  • The pause banner can be followed by turning those forms off at any time—do not assume the window stays open because the cards are still pictured.
  • Banker / referral / employee channels are separate; they follow Amex’s own sourcing rules and may close in the same window.
  • If a form errors, times out, or stops accepting PAN/KYC, treat the pause as fully on for that product.

Existing cardholders

Nothing material changes if you already hold an Amex. Keep using the card, Membership Rewards, statements, and add-on cards under current T&Cs. Supplementary cards and upgrades are not the same as a brand-new customer application—confirm with Amex if you have a live request in flight.

Membership Rewards Credit Card (MRCC), Gold Charge, and SmartEarn are not in that featured pause-era strip. When Amex last narrowed sourcing, the live apply set was often thinner than the full historical India lineup. A reopen is the moment to watch whether MRCC, Gold Charge, and Platinum Travel stay in the apply mix—or whether sourcing comes back as Platinum Charge + Platinum Reserve only.

When applications may reopen

Amex’s banner does not print a date. The working expectation is a resume around mid-October 2026. Treat that as a planning window, not a guaranteed go-live day. Previous India pauses also came back with welcome-gift tweaks—worth watching, not worth transferring a strategy onto a rumour.

Who should care

Care if you were about to apply for a first Amex, a second core (Travel vs Reserve vs Charge), or you were waiting for MRCC / Gold Charge to come back. Existing Cardmembers can ignore the headline.
